Georgia State Historic Preservation Plan Update | 2026 - 2035

What is a State Historic Preservation Plan?
Comprehensive statewide historic preservation plans are important tools each State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) prepares at regular intervals to ensure historic resources - buildings, sites, structures, landscapes, and more - are considered in SHPO programming and technical assistance in thoughtful and measurable ways.
The National Park Service (NPS) requires each SHPO to prepare and implement an updated preservation plan. Plans include summary assessments of the current status of historic resources in the state, including important issues, threats, and opportunities that may impact them. Updated goals and objectives are created, along with proposed actions that can directly fulfill the planning objectives.

Make Your Voice Heard!
The planning process is meant to be a community endeavor between preservation partners, local and state historical societies, Main Street communities, and the general public, all participating and lending their voices to the plan. This engagement is important to creating the plan’s overall goals and objectives.
Your voice is vital to creating a successful plan. Please think of the following questions in your feedback and future interactions with us during the planning period:
What does preservation mean to you and your community?
What preservation priorities would you like to see in place during the next ten years?
Online Survey
An online survey is available for the public to share their views on preservation issues and priorities for Georgia’s historic resources. The survey will close on November 28, 2025.
