Deitrah J. Taylor is a native Georgian with maternal Gullah/Geechee roots. She has been working in public history since graduating with a Master of Arts in History with a Public History concentration in 2009.  In 2014, she began practicing dramaturgy starting with Georgia College’s production of August Wilson’s Piano Lesson.  She serves as a lecturer of history at Fort Valley State University and currently serves as the historical consultant for the Historic Douglass Theatre in Macon, Georgia. She has also created museum tours and cultural programs, facilitated discussions, given lectures, and worked with actors and production teams giving audiences a chance to travel in time and see someone else’s point of view. She builds worlds so people can learn about and from one another. Deitrah also assists new playwrights ensuring their scripts are historically and culturally accurate, allowing audiences to time travel and learn. Deitrah also co-wrote a play for the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival which was performed in 2019. Deitrah is dedicated to teaching the public history and culture.  During the pandemic, Taylor lectured virtually at California State San Bernardino and created her own company Joyeful Time Traveler LLC. 2021 was a transition year for Deitrah. After caring for her mother (Delean) for six years, Delean passed away from complications of Type One Diabetes and a stroke. Deitrah recently completed the film production certificate program at Clayton State University’s Continuing Education program and looks to embrace growth, change and healing.
